The Impact of Healthcare Information Systems on Hospital Performance: An Empirical Study

Abstract

Background: The rapid digitization of healthcare services in India has led to widespread adoption of Healthcare Information Systems (HIS) across hospitals. However, empirical evidence regarding their impact on hospital performance remains fragmented.

Objective: This study examines the relationship between HIS implementation and hospital performance metrics in Indian healthcare institutions, focusing on operational efficiency, clinical outcomes, and financial performance.

Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted across 127 hospitals in Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, and Chennai between January 2023 and December 2023. Data were collected through structured questionnaires, hospital records, and performance metrics. Multiple regression analysis and structural equation modeling were employed to analyze the relationships.

Results: HIS implementation demonstrated significant positive correlation with operational efficiency (r = 0.742, p < 0.001), patient satisfaction scores (r = 0.689, p < 0.001), and cost reduction (r = -0.634, p < 0.001). Hospitals with comprehensive HIS showed 23% improvement in average length of stay, 31% reduction in medical errors, and 18% increase in revenue per bed.

Conclusions: Healthcare Information Systems significantly enhance hospital performance across multiple dimensions. The study provides empirical evidence supporting HIS adoption as a strategic investment for Indian healthcare institutions.
